Hello,
I have a strong Finance background and am CFO of our company. I was recently promoted to oversee the I.T. department. I am pretty technically savvy and understand technology at a higher level than the average non I.T. employee, but acknowledge I must rely significantly on my I.T. staff of 2 for support.
Our I.T. department has been poorly ran in the past, we have poor documentation, and the help desk ticketing needs to be improved. We need a better handle on inventory management and I will largely involved in making sure we are making wise investments to improve performance and overall function of the I.T. department and ensure the investments are for the overall vision of the company.
My question is what tools are available to help me get my feet on the ground. What things should I be focused on in the first week, month, quarter of managing the department. I really want to transform the department to a culture of service and ensuring our customers (other employees) feel like the I.T. department is really there to help them out. As a finance person, I also want to ensure that we are regularly replacing outdated equipment. Does the spiceworks free tools give me information on workstation and server age, status, performance ect.?
Any answers to the questions above and feedback you can provide me is much appreciated.
