Difference between importing PST into Outlook vs importing into Exchange 2010SP1

Hello all,

I will be importing 19 PSTs into Exchange 2010 sp1 this week. The PSTs will come from either exMerge out of Exchange 2003 or Outlook 2010 connected to Exchange 2003. I've been doing some testing and have some strange results:

- Tried importing directly into Exchange using PowerShell commandlet New-MailBoxImportRequest.

- This took hours on a 1.9GB PST file and failed several times. I upped the BadItemLimit switch to 10 or 20 in the end and it still failed.

- Tried importing the PST into Outlook 2010.

- Took about 10 minutes.

- Count of Inbox items was off by 2 items after the import. After it synced with Exchange it was off by 15 items. I read someplace that Exchange will dump items that are slightly corrupted even though Outlook imports them.

So, my question:

Is the mechanism that Outlook imports items in different than how Exchange imports them?

Why was it taking hours to import directly into Exchange? The process of importing the PST into Outlook AND syncing with Exchange took less than half the time the import into Exchange took. And the import into Exchange Failed at 84%.

I've now found that there is some logging that can be turned on when importing into Exchange vs no logging when importing with Outlook. Is that usefull or am I just better off importing into Outlook?

I'm really looking for maximum success in bringing the mailboxes in even if it takes a little more time.

Thanks,

-John
