Spiceworks referrals, site badges and new installs, oh my!

Hey guys, I was hoping for some community help on this "referral" thing. I've had (at least) a dozen people download and install Spiceworks off the links in my article or - more recently - the Spicebadge on http://www.trevorpott.com. None of these seem to reflect in my profile.

Now, I'm not vain enough to actually care, but it does leave me curious as the to mechanisms (or lack there of) behind the referrals process. Are these referrals tracked by the Spiceworks servers, or are new activations poured through by a human at the SpiceHQ? How are referred installations linked back to the referrer? Where is this information kept, by whom and for how long?

Along a similar line of questioning, how do things "count" if I simply click the badge on my own website in order to get to the page for the downloads, then download and install the thing onto a new customer site? (Assuming I create a new user with a unique e-mail address for the install.)

I ask all of this because I am trying to put together a detailed feature request that – if I can convince someone at the SpiceHQ to adopt it - should dramatically streamline the referrals process. More importantly, it should make the lives of consultants (like myself) who have to run dozens of Spiceworks installs across multiple companies a little bit easier.

Before you can walk, however, you have to crawl; thus before I can really dive into that spec, I need to understand the referrals process (and account linking) in detail.

Please lend your knowledge, fellow Spiceheads!
