I am the IT guy for a school district. You don't realize how many laws and acts that you have to follow on a daily basis to keep kids safe. Normal IT corporate set ups have websense or something to block users from going to unwanted sites. Imagine 1000 children having free reign at your network. It's a nightmare. We aren't a big school with a big budget so we have to get creative with working with FERPA and the child internet protection act. For example, we have iPads that some of the special ed kids use inside and outside our schools. It's much easier to protect a kid when it's your network, but much more difficult to do so when they are at home. For this particular case I had to create a VPN tunnel back to our network and filter the kid that way. We have teachers that also have laptops they take home. Security doesn't end at your own network, you have to protect everything all the time, and you are still at risk with keeping up with Java exploits, Adobe exploits and Microsoft patches. Webroot has some excellent tools that help you protect your network and your machines at the office and at home.
