We have a handful of HP laser printers that have been in service 5-7 years and have never been cleaned. Needless to say, there is quite a bit of toner built up on the inside of the printer. I would like to perform some preventative maintenance on these printers by cleaning up the excess toner and cleaning the rollers and pads before we starting having print quality issues.
As of right now my method of cleaning is going to be to use a lightly damp paper towel and wipe the insides of the printers down. Is there a better or more standard way of doing this? I've heard canned air isn't always recommended because the toner can get on some of the printer optics. I know there are vacuums designed specifically for toner, but those are very expensive.
Also, is there a recommended solution I can use to clean the pads and rollers? Or just rinse them off with water and re-install them after they dry completely?
