Storage/Networking broad question

Hey Guys,

Could someone give me a really good explanation of exactly what a "storage fabric" or "fabric network" is? To my understanding "fabrics" demarcation point is the storage switches which will typically take FC uplink and connect that to your standard ethernet LAN. However if you are going straight FC to Host then is a "fabric" still being used?

Is a fabric really just a technical term for a super redundant - highly dependable - low latency lan segment between your switch and your SAN?

Thanks.
