So looking into memory upgrades for a server, I start asking questions. In this case a Dell PowerEdge R710 with one CPU and one open socket. We may (hopefully) go to two sockets populated, but not today. The question is that I asked our Dell Server Rep -- apparently Single Rank and Dual Rank memory is best for a single socket, and Quad Rank is best for dual sockets. He assured me that it would only be "miliseconds of lag" if we purchased dual rank and upgraded the box for two CPUs.
Is this true, and how big is the impact really? 2ms of lag would probably kill the box if its a VM Host I assume or a database server...
