We currently have a document management (DM) system in place that was created by a relatively small company (it sits within Lotus Notes). While it has its benefits, it lacks the facility to allow our mobile staff to access it easily when out of the office. Generally, if they are out and about they are either doing a remote replication of data (which can be flaky, and often results in document version conflict errors) or, if they are using their mobile, can access documents as read-only via a link, so they can't edit. Also, due to the structure, not all documents are available this way.
We would like to have something that probably we would host internally, but that would have greater accessability for staff outside the office. I have looked at Sharepoint and such, but it is probably a bit overkill for us, and expensive.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Apart from easy remote access, it needs to have the usual ability for confidentiality and security - also good document 'check out' functionality would be useful.
