The Integration That Makes Procurement Simple

$

For the uninitiated business owner, the procurement process can appear to be a simple, basic procedure. The process of procurement is often part of a company’s strategy because the ability to purchase certain materials will determine if operations will continue. Because procurement is an umbrella term that includes several core business functions it should be considered a core part of any organization’s strategy.

Most IT pros don’t exactly “jump for joy” when they hear procurement. When the products or services you use can’t define a solid implementation process it can severely impact your bottom line and overall mentality. Aligning your procurement function with your corporate strategy is only one part of the ultimate goal of procurement. Goods and services also need to be purchased. But like all important business functions,...

Switch configuration question. Best practice vs preference

So I have been playing around with Cisco IOS devices for a number of years. I have mostly done configurations on Catalyst 2960 devices a little experience with layer 3 switches.

I have decided to study for my CCNA using online resources, as convenient as they are that are times when you have questions that cannot be answered because there is not a live person there.

My question is regarding port security.

Generally for ports in our environment that are unused we just shut them down.

The instructor on the video series I am using suggests putting them into access mode and then assigning a go nowhere VLAN.

I understand the potential issues with having the port in a non dedicated state (access/trunk) but with the port just shut off does that eliminate the concern without extra typing.

Is this a personal preference thing or is there school of...

Looking for Business Management software

We are a small MSP looking for something to replace TigerPaw (they shut us down because they closed off their license server and that killed all the paid for licenses we had). I am looking for something to manage the business stuff as well as client specific information (e.g. hardware purchases, serial numbers, passwords, network configuration info, etc.) along with a way to create custom quotes for contract service and hardware purchases.

Does anyone have any inexpensive solutions they're using? We use Continuum for our IT side but we need a good business management tool.

Is VLAN really required

We are moving to a hosted IP based phone system, and I have 2 remote sites 5 users with thin clients and 5 ip phones going on their desks.

I know best practice is to create a separate voice and data vlan, but on a site that small, is it really required?

To enable vlans it would require removing and recreating the existing configuration on the firewalls as their current config does not support VLANS.

MFA for Outlook 2016 on Windows 7 SP1

Since last Friday, it seems for any Windows 7 SP1 user who has changed their password, Office 365 modern authentication no longer works. The user will open Outlook, the box will pop-up as if it's going to let them authenticate, but then the box will remain blank (no password field or any info, for that matter). It's also somewhat intermittent since I have gotten the field to pop at least once or twice out of 100 or attempts on my test machine. Has anyone else seen this happen? Windows 10 seems to be immune to whatever it is.

Adding the EnableADAL dword to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity does allow me to use the app password to authenticate, but I'm not really wanting to chase this registry key around while we await a real fix. Disabling multi-factor also works, but we need MFA enabled. Something that...

Add-Member Do Math

I've got a script that essentially runs Get-Childitem and sticks the results in a SQL table, but the people who use the data want Length divided by 1024. I've tried about a dozen variations of this:

Powershell
$data|Add-Member-NotePropertyNameSize-NotePropertyValueLength/1024

I can't get it to actually evaluate Length/1024, though. My Google-Fu is failing me.

Printing with Canon Generic PCL6 Plus drivers v 5.10 crashes apps intermittently

At a clients site we recently installed a few dozen Canon printers, LBP215, LBP312. Clients are connecting via USB, direct IP, and through server. Occasionally users will print from any app, even including test page from the driver, and it will open up a "print to file" dialog box and crash what ever app sent the print job. Cancelling the save to file with sometime print the file, but always the app will crash. Word, Excel, Chrome, Adobe, notepad, print driver. The problem happens with all connection types. Needless to say this can be a problem when a user prints a document they have not saved, their work will be lost. They do not want to use UFR II drivers due to a print quality issue.

no logs of the crash in event viewer.

no duplicate wow32 services

OS is Windows 7x64.

They are using a VM client win7 x64

The sender email you've entered is already taken by a Spiceworks

Hi,

So I went to reset password for my outgoing and incoming email. I had it set up but needed to reset because of a security issue. So the incoming settings went fine but when I go and try set the outgoing I get the message "The sender email you've entered is already taken by a Spiceworks""Please choose a different email address in the field above" So I have read many options of editing email address and then going to remove user. The problem I have is that email address is associated with every ticket we have and have been using for years. I did a test with another user to see what happens if I change email address and remove from spiceworks. It closes all tickets. Maybe I am doing this wrong?

So is there any way I can use the email address I want in spiceworks or any work arounds? I reset a password and all things have fallen apart. I...

Did you know that the Galaxy Note9 S Pen can translate a range of languages on the fly? Personally, that is my favorite feature. However, there are so many other amazing features that is has to offer.

Two things distinguished the Samsung Galaxy Note when it was first released in 2011: its pioneering large-screen form factor, and the S Pen stylus.

The S Pen has always perfectly amplified the Note’s productivity focus. It allows users to take handwritten notes, create or annotate drawings, edit and highlight text — and then translate it to and from other languages — and many other time-saving features.

Given that the S Pen is both practical and convenient, it’s no wonder Samsung user surveys have found:

  • 92 percent of Note8 users are active S Pen users
  • 73 percent specifically bought the Note8 for the S Pen
  • Note users are 24 percent more...

What is wrong with my image?

I'm relatively new to WSUS, as I'm trying to clean our server up and get it working right nsince I migrated the role from an old 2003 physical box to a new 2016 VM. I've noticed that all of the Windows 7 PC's that I've imaged since I've started here a few months ago aren't reporting at all in WSUS. A Windows 10 laptop built from scratch is, so I'm assuming that there's something wrong with my Windows 7 image.

I've been able to force two clients to check in by stopping the Windows Update Service, deleting the SUSClientID registry entry from HKLM Software Microsoft Windows Current Version WindowsUpdate and running a wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /reportnow /detectnow.

How do I fix this going forward so that I don't have this problem again when reimaging or imaging new PC's? Thanks in advance for the help.

Software Restriction Policy and 1Password

Having a tough time getting 1Password to work with Software Restriction Policy in place.

OS: 10 Pro 1803

SRP is set to whitelisted only.
Paths (Unrestricted): Windows and both Program Files folders (explicit paths used due to known issues with variable paths).

Enforcement is set to include libraries (All software files).

Agilebits and MS are in the Trusted Publishers (sha1 ans sha256 certs installed).

All my programs and apps work fine, except 1Password (v7.5.2).

So far I've been able to get it to work by adding a path rule for "%localappdata%\1password\app\7\*.dll".

But since that is a user writeable location, this is not the correct answer.

To me it seems that somehow 1password.exe is calling DLL's that are somehow not being accepted by SRP.

Working with Agilebits support (they're awesome so far with zero BS answers) to get to the bottom of...

You need to hear this.

Windows 10 October 2018 update, take two (this time won't delete your data)

Remember when thousands of Windows 10 users were reporting that their data was randomly being permanently deleted following an October Windows Update? Microsoft quickly withdrew the update and apparently, that "oops" led to a rethinking of how Windows 10 updates are handled.

In a Nov. 13 blog post, Microsoft writes:

"In early October, we paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update as we investigated isolated reports of users missing files after updating. We take any case of data loss seriously, and as I noted on October 9, we have thoroughly investigated and resolved all related issues.

"In addition to extensive internal validation, we have taken time to closely monitor feedback...

Installing new Meraki MS250 switch

I am replacing my core Cisco C3750 switch with a Meraki MS250 tonight. Everything looks reasonably simple except for this line in the configs for the C3750:

!
router rip
network 10.0.0.0
network 192.168.100.0
!

Obviously, the first number is the /8 range of my network but I don't know of anything on my network using the 192.168.100.0/24 range so these sort of look like some kind of default setting to me -- I am totally unfamiliar with RIP so am a little concerned that there could be an issue. I ran the sho rip route command on my stack and nothing came up, but the only L3 routing is on the switch I'm replacing anyway.

The MX does not support RIP so I'd like to know if this is potentially going to be an issue. I've replaced some downstream switches in the network with Meraki devices and had not issues.

Hyper-V Core 2016 monitor issue

Hi,

So I've just installed Hyper-V Core 2016 on a spare PC(one that has all the virtualization capabilities) and everything is good but one very annoying issue.

If i turn the computer monitor off then back on then the monitor acts as if nothing is connected to it - so i literally have to hold the power button then turn the server back on just to get the monitor to work.

Also if i leave the monitor on and walk away for an hour or so and comeback the cursor is the only thing on the screen, nothing else - that also requires a reboot to fix it.

Anyone seen this before?
