Why IAAAlways use TLS for everything

I was reading an Ars Technica article about the latest big routing mistake on the Interwebs, recent 'misconfigurations' by China Telecom, and speculation whether they were actually mistakes or intentional spying.

The first thing that came to mind is the many Spiceworks discussions I've read about using TLS for all websites, with some spiceheads advocating HTTP only for 'static websites.'
While reasonable people may disagree whether encryption is needed for static website content, there is definitely a need for ensuring Integrity, which is inherent in TLS. Most people assume wrongly that internet routing is a robust, secure, and well-governed process, and that means that IAAA is inherent.
However, this really has never been true, as while the dedicated defenders of internet routing have gotten better at detecting mistakes, BGP was never...

Hello everyone,

I need a suggestion for a reasonably priced or free softphone that integrates with Active Directory or\and Office 365 contact list.
The softphone must support SIP trunking.

Is anyone familiar with such a softphone?

Smart TV / Laptop Wireless Screen Mirroring

We currently have Samsung Smart TV's and have been using WIN10 Laptops to to a screen share to them but with issues. The connections drop and freeze randomly and many blogs I have read all users complain about the wireless built into the TV and the same issues we have.

I am looking for a good 75" Smart TV that has reliable builtin wireless for presentation usage, any suggestions on brands other than Samsung would be great.

Thanks

Windows 1803 Oct Cumulative Update caused kernelbase.dll issues. Is it fixable?

I closely watch sites like AskWoody to get a feel for the safety level of Windows Updates. Unfortunately, I used myself as a guinea pig for the October cumulative update to 1803.

Shortly after the required reboot, I noticed that OneDrive for Business wouldn't launch, Sophos Endpoint Protection wasn't working properly, and our accounting software wouldn't launch. I've narrowed it down to an issue with a common DLL, kernelbase.dll. I removed the update right away. No errors were logged during the install or uninstall of the update.

The text below is an example of what I find in event viewer. Removing and installing these applications doesn't help. Trying another profile doesn't help. Overwriting kernelbase.dll with a copy from a known-good machine doesn't help. I've run sfc /scannow and the DISM health checks with no problems found. I've...

802.1x Wireless Issues after Domain Schema Upgrade

We are using 802.1x authentication for our staff WiFi network. Our wireless infrastructure consists of a pair of Cisco 2504 WLC (configured for HA) and 10 Cisco APs. Over the past year, we completed a server infrastructure overhaul that included upgrading our domain schema from 2008 to 2012R2, which also meant migrating and upgrading our NPS server (RADIUS) as well the Enterprise CA (AD CS). We had some minor headaches with 802.1x authentication after the upgrade from 2008 to 2012R2, but I was able to find the root cause relatively quickly. The CRL Distribution point was not changed to reflect the new host name of the CA. We also decided to federate with ADFS as part of the overhaul so we could leverage Azure MFA server for VPN access. Shortly after rolling out ADFS we started to experience the fallout of "password spray attacks" which...

Micron’s 5210 ION Enterprise SATA QLC SSD Delivers 8x Faster Machine Learning!

Colfax just published their findings in “How New QLC SATA SSDs Deliver 8x Faster Machine Learning,” a white paper in which they analyze how the Micron 5210 SSD outperforms legacy (traditional) machine learning storage (7200 RPM HDDs). Colfax looked at throughput and completion time of a TFRecord using a 7.68TB 5210 ION SSD and a Seagate 7200 RPM HDD and said:

“In our study, with the Micron 5210 ION SSD, a read-intensive transformation of an image dataset with the purpose of a TFRecord file creation was accelerated by about 8x compared to a similar-sized HDD. In a 100,000 image dataset at 23MB per image, our test HDD took 15.17 hours to resize the images and pack them into a single TFRecord file while the Micron 5210 ION SSD took only 1.88 hours to do the same task–13 additional hours for the HDD to complete the same work.”

Issues with BItLocker after installing a new hard drive on ThinkPad T420s

Hello,

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T420s on which I have installed a brand new Intel SSD hard drive. Then I've installed fresh Windows 10 Pro, but can't get the BitLocker to work with TPM. When enabling BitLocker and running the system check, after a reboot following message comes up:

"BitLocker could not be enabled.

The data drive specified is not set to automatically unlock on the current computer and cannot be unlocked automatically.

C: was not encrypted"

Following are listed in event logs:

BitLocker-Driver - Event ID 24680 - Bootmgr failed to unseal VMK using the TPM

BitLocker-Driver - Event ID 24636 - Bootmgr failed to obtain the BitLocker volume master key from the TPM

Windows 10 Pro version is 1803. System information shows BIOS mode UEFI.

I did clear the TPM under TPM.msc but that didn't help, what else can I try?

Thanks in advance!!!

AD FS - Broken, or incomplete setup?

I have just inherited a Very Exciting Network. TL;DR - well-established company has plowed through six sysadmins in the last few years and there isn't a single complete project - just mountains of endeavors at 60%.

I just stumbled upon an AD FS server - I don't know why it was built or why it was built by itself on a VM, but it's just there, apparently doing nothing. There is no application that anyone is aware of for federation services here - it's just a single, local domain.

I can't get the MMC to load - "an error occurred during an attempt to access the ad fs configuration database." The AD FS service is not running. Event log goes back to July, there doesn't appear to be much there. I do note that various FS DBs are installed and running. I haven't dug in any further, because I'm really unsure whether I should try and fix the DB...

Congrats to our newest PC!!

Crisis and Disaster Management: Are you Ready for 2019?

With 2018 coming to a close, what can businesses do in order to ensure they are properly preparing for the coming year's risk of crisis and natural disaster? Below I will outline a few best practices with this year's Hurricane Florence as a reference.

Watch trends to strengthen your plan:

When considering your strategy for response effectiveness, it is important anticipate trends in order to improve your current plan and close any potential gaps that exist. This includes accounting for a few key trends such as natural disaster, cybersecurity, data outages, active shooters (unfortunately), and mobile use.

Remember that strong communications during any kind of crisis serves your mission by helping strengthen public safety efforts. The better your communications, the more likely you are to be able to improve safety and save lives. In turn,...

iPhone sluggishness/slow mail delivery. A worn SIM connector may be the culprit

Learned a new one yesterday...

A colleague noticed his iPhone seemed kind of slow lately for no apparent reason. I feared it might be some form of malware or spyware...

He took it in to have a mobile phone tech look at it. To his (and my) surprise, he learned that apparently some iPhones purchased directly from Apple have had excessive SIM card connector wear issues.

They ripped my buddy a new SIM and swapped it in. He now has a “new phone”. Much fasterrrrr

Has anyone else had a SIMilar experience?

Server 2012 R2 UPDs corrupt on server crash

Hello,

I have about 12 RDSH with a connection broker.

From time to time windows crashes and reboots and users get a temp profile.

I tried closing files on the File server where the UPDs are stored but that has not helped and we have to restore UPDs all the time when a server reboots.

Is this a common thing? is there anything i can do to make this more stable or not have to do UPD restores? If i upgrade the servers 2016 would this help or solve the issue?

Any insight would help since i really do not want to go back to individual servers again and assign people to each on :/

SBS 2011 to Server 2016 with Office 365 Migration

My dear fellow Spiceheads,

I want to migrate my SBS2011 to a Server 2016 Standard server. Exchange has already been migrated to Office 365. I tried looking for some guides but a lot of them talk about SBS to Exchange on-prem.

Does someone have a guide for SBS2011 to a Server 2016 Standard server migration?

Thanks for being awesome!

This is some "Heavy" news.

So apparently, scientists decided it's time to change up how we weigh things and are going to be swapping out the current standard for something else. Does this mean we have to go to remedial school? Just kidding. Luckily as the article says, it's not going to be noticed by anybody outside of an advanced lab. With news like this, I wonder how often we in IT change up standards that have existed forever and what is the oldest "still in function" standard we use today. Interactive Big Screen TV / Monitor Options

Several years ago we purchased a "BigTouch", interactive  70" TV / Computer/ Touch-screen Monitor. Basically it was a big touch-screen monitor with an integrated PC running Windows 10.

It has since broken beyond repair and I'm looking for a replacement. I could go with something very similar or maybe a 70" touch-screen monitor with a remotely connected PC.

Just wondering if any of you have done something like that. Bringing two seperate devices together means if one part breaks it is easily replaced without tossing the whole thing.

Increase Office365 message send and receive limits

Mailbox permissions

Hello,

I am in a hybrid O365 environment with one way replication (to the cloud).    I need to be able to read Send As and Full Access permissions on a shared mailbox via power shell.

I tried the following commmand, but it fails to find the mailbox

Text
Get-Mailbox 'UPN@domain.com' | FL

I can run the following command and see the mailbox properties

Text
Get-RemoteMailbox 'UPN@domain.com' | FL

However I cannot for the life of me figure out how to read the permissions, as the normal Get-MailboxPermission cmdlet for some reason can't see the mailbox.

I'm obviously missing something here.. any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
