Search Currently Open Files, Show Details of Who is Locking...

My company is migrating our primary servers from Linux to Windows Server 2016.

On our current file server, we have a web tool which uses the smbstatus command to allow us to search for a file (or even just a few letters of the file name) and will return the user, group, and IP address which has the file locked. This is updated in real time without a refresh required and allows us to kill the process if need be.

I see that in Windows I can view locked files via Computer Management - Shared Folders - Open Files, however this does not appear to contain the ability to search for a specific file, either via full name or a partial string, nor does it show the group, IP, or refresh automatically. Additionally, even pulling it up is a bit more of a task than our current tool as it would require logging into the file server.

Is there any way to...

It's been too long!

It's been too long since we've gotten together for a SpiceCorps meetup. I'd like to get one setup for late April or early May.

Should I get a vendor to present and buy supper or should we just get together and split the bill for pizza?

If you would like a vendor to sponsor the next meeting, what category/topic should we cover?

WOULD YOU LIKE TO GIVE A PRESENTATION?!?!

It's been a while, so I'm ready to put any kind of meet up together, and make it the best it can be!

Thanks,

Automatic response through Microsoft Flow

Hi all

I am having an issue setting up a flow to send automatic replies to all emails received (except internal staff)

I don't want to use out of office as I need the email to sendevery time an email is received, whether they have already received one or not.

It's effectively one of those "Your response has been received and someone will be in touch within the next 1-2 business days" type thing

My issue is it will still only send the email once.

Here is a screenshot of what I have.

I just really want it to send every single time an email comes through.

Automation of Site server builds.

Hi I’m looking for a way to Automate build and configuration of our Temporary project sites servers. I work in the Construction industry and we have to setup temporary sites with in house infrastructure. Currently we build these manually. It’s a Windows 2012 standard server with Two VMs in a nested Hyper - V environment. Both the VMs are Print and file servers. Is there a way to write a PowerShell script and automate the whole process? Please let me know your thoughts.

Backup: Full Solution or component built solution for Datacenter

TLDR: Pros and cons of in house built solution or maintenance based enterprise solution? More details, see below.

Background: So when I started my new position several months ago, everything was burning down. I entered knowing this and even half of the orientation was not doable because the systems were down. I have dug burn lines and I have assessed, documented, and began hosing down the fires.

The Data center is a high availability 24x7 accessed environment and is about 95% virtualized. This is tested and working. Our last fall back is currently a 2 year out of support backup system. Regulations dictate that we have extreme backups. The current retention policy is just terrible for this solution and the whole thing needs to be burned down and rebuilt. So my IT manager and I have been speaking to several vendors and getting solutions...

Phishing Survey Scam Heads up

I wanted to give the Spiceworks Community a heads up on a phishing survey scam we just got hit with today. One of our users got an e-mail from a vendor that they regularly have contact with. The e-mail contained a link to a survey website and the page had the logo for Microsoft Office 365 and only asked 2 questions: They asked for a username and a password and then said thanks for taking the survey. We immediately had the user change their Windows password. It also turned out that the vendor's account had been hacked.

Win 10 LTSC 2019 - Start menu apps not showing until 2nd login

Imaged/deployed several Win 10 iterations from 1607 through 1803, Enterprise and LTSB/C.  Working on new LTSC deployment.  All is good except the following:

Image deployed, added to domain, added to desired OU, login as various users.  With first time login, (profile from local system not roaming/mandatory), the only 'Start' applications listed are under S - Search & Settings - until logging off and back in.  On second login, all apps are listed.

The reason the above is an issue is that these particular systems are in educational 'classroom' environment for the instructor machines.  We utilize Faronics 'Deepfreeze' to lock environment from changes (reset on reboot), thus user profiles are wiped.

Anyone come across this?  Not finding much out there research-wise for this scenario.

AD user display name on PC login

Have a client where the first name of an AD user was originally misspelled. The situation has been fixed in AD, and there is no trace of old / incorrect first name in the system. But the workstation still shows the old, wrong name.

How can this be forced to update?

The username itself is fine, but the staff member is annoyed with seeing he misspelling on their login backgound.

I have tried temporarily deleting the local user folder on the workstation, but that was no good.

Lock Down Your Digital Identity

The last decade has been one of digital revolution, leading to the rapid adoption of new technology standards, often without the consideration of privacy ramifications. This has left many of us with a less-than-secure trail of digital breadcrumbs—something cybercriminals are more than aware of. Identity theft is by no means a new problem, but the technology revolution has created what some are calling a “global epidemic.”

Securing your digital identity is more important now than ever, and Webroot can help you start.

What is a Digital Identity?

The first step in locking down your digital identity is understanding what it is. A digital identity is the combination of any and all identifying information that can connect a digital persona to an actual person. Digital identities are largely comprised of information freely shared by the user,...

Lithuanian man defrauds millions from Facebook, Google

I might be guilty of sharing one too many puppy memes on the Internet, but Lithuanian Evaldas Rimasauskas just pleaded guilty to defrauding Facebook and Google. He was able to gain more than $100 million by posing as Asian hardware vendors.

According to IT Pro:

“Evaldas Rimasauskas, who is originally from Vilnius in Lithuania, was extradited to the US in 2017 to face charges for wire fraud. He entered a plea to a district court in Manhattan and could face a maximum sentence of 30-years in prison. Prosecutors accused Rimasauskas and unnamed co-conspirators of bilking Google and Facebook out of more than $100 million by posing as Asian hardware vendors claiming that the tech companies owed them money.”

Access is denied - Powershell to add-computer to domain from SetupComplete.cmd

My head is a bloody stump from beating it against a wall over this.

I'm really just trying to make a sysprepped computer join the domain the next time it starts. Can't use MDT or sccm or user interaction, has to be fully automated.

So I've tried joining the domain from unattend directly. Never works. Apparently because that section comes before the computername part. Or so I've read.

Next I tried using firstlogoncommands to run a powershell script to join. Never works. I had other issues with my ps1 so I might be willing to revisit this.

Finally, I put the powershell command inside of setupcomplete.cmd Still doesn't work.

I did a lot of tests, and basically it just keeps telling me access is denied. I then joined it manually without issue, just out of paranoia about the machine existing in AD. But no, something is wrong. I tried it with...

MFCMAPI Public Folders Contacts

Hi,

Have run into this issue where you can't edit the notes field of a contact.  In this case the contacts are in a public folder in Exchange 2007.

I am running MFCMAPI and deleting the PR_TRANSPORT_MESSAGE_HEADERS_W property, which is working.  However, not all of the contacts are visible in MFCMAPI and I don't know why that would be.

Any thoughts on this or is there a PowerShell technique for reading and deleting this property from a contact if it exists?

Thanks!

Windows 10 Multi User (Session Host)

Hello all,

So as most of us know Office 365 Pro Plus is not supported on Windows Server 2019 RDSH.

My question is has anyone been able to test Windows 10 Multi User mode in Azure?

I would love to know what your experience has been from the cost compared to a typical RDS deployment (still in Azure). I have heard mixed information on the amount of connections per host but it sounds like its either 10 or 21..

With that being said we have right around 30 users.

Anyone tested it? Whats your experience like? Is the user profile stored on that Windows 10 host? I am assuming so but like I said i'm asking if anyone has tested it and what it was like.

Thanks!

Nasuni alternatives

Hello Everyone, so we are looking for a file system software that can do the following:

1) centralized in Azure or AWS

2) Backed up in the cloud.

3) supports multiple caching servers onsite in different offices that could house the same data.

4) File locking capabilities where if someone is modifying a file in one office, the file cannot be modified in a different office.

I am aware that Nasuni has these features... anyone else?

Deploy EAP-TLS Certificate Based Authentication Wireless with Intune?

$

We are considering getting an MDM for use with Android, iOS, MacOS as well as some of our Windows laptops.

Our domain-joined Windows laptops can get wifi profile settings, trust the root CA and autoenroll for its own device certificate all through group policy.

However, how can this happen for Android, iOS and MacOS via Intune?

I can imagine there must be some way to push the wireless connection profile settings and trusted root CA certificate to the device via Intune, but where would the mobile devices get their own device certificates used to authenticate to RADIUS via certificate based authentication?

Can Intune somehow automatically request a certificate on behalf of the device and then push it to the device?  If so, how does this work?

Have split DNS but want to access resources externally

We have a internal/public DNS zone, 12345.com for example. Internal zone has internal IP addresses and public has external IP addresses. We recently switched DNS to Cloudflare and I would like to start using them as a CDN/proxy, however I need to roll these changes through development/QA then production. We use our own product so we need to be able to hit our own site from outside, DNS sends people internally though so it wouldn't test Cloudflare.

Modifying the clients HOSTS file would work but this would be a pain to do, I can't update the internal DNS with public IPs. Wondering if anyone can think of any other options?
