would like to know your favorite layout of cabling from switch to patch panel

$

I would be happy if you can share your favorite layout of cabling from switches to patch panels.

Now we have a rack, and patch panels are placed every 2 U. If we insert a 1U switch, then only 1U left for cable management bay (if we use the bay).

In this situation, what is your suggestion? Is there any 1U cable management bay in the market?

Or if we connect switches and patch panels by directly cabling vertical, how long the cables should be in your experiences.

Thanks for any responses.

Unable to install Office 2016

Hi team, I am using an MSP in conjunction with the config.xml to try and install Office 2016 (not C2R). I am using MDT. I mounted the ISO, and copied off the files to a separate folder. I also mounted the ISO for the language pack, and copied off the languages I needed to the folder I put the main office files in.

I created the application in MDT, then under the properties of the application, I did the following:

  • set the command line to setup.exe /config
  • I clicked on the Office Products tab and did:
  1. Click the dropdown and selected ProPlus
  2. checked the box for the languages I wanted to force install
  3. clicked the button to launch the OCT and enabled the langues for editing
  4. configured display options to basic (I want to at least see the setup window)
  5. saved msp to updates folder of the office folder

Back in MDT under the properties of the...

Calculating blocks of time from multiple records

I have a csv file that has records from a RTLS system that show when an RFID chip was in range of the sensor every 10 seconds. it looks like the picture below. In the picture I have imported it into Access and used a query to perform a calculation on the time stamp. I need to try to find a way to consolidate all records that are within 10 seconds of its previous record until a gap of more than 10 seconds is found between records, then start again until a gap greater than 10 seconds is found and consolidate those records. there could be as few as one record for each consolidated record at times or very many into each consolidated record at other times. each of these sets of records also must have the same beaconID (it also needs to be in the same latitiude and longitude location which is 2 fields not shown in the picture)and the amount...

How to speed up a production database?

Hi Guys,

I am not a DB expert, i currently have a MSSQL 2016 VM  with 24 vCores and 58GB DDR4 ram.

Migrating to a standalone with 2 Xeon, 16 Cores/32 threads. 256 DDR4 with SAS 2.5'' in Raid 5, config. DB is on 2 mirrored enterprise SSD.

Our production Database is managed by the partner company that we purchase the WMS from, the issue is we are running into bottle neck, when someone is running large queries.

Currently 90% resources is going to the SQL and 10% to the OS. Can i run queries to speed up the database? Any script that i can use to find errors?

Is it possible to quickly backup the DB to Azure without bringing the DB to a crawl? We have 100/100 fiber connection.

much appreciated.

Clearing out old junk like ticket uploads and scheduled reports

Today I had to restart our Spiceworks and it was taking a long time to come back. According to the production.log it took about 5 minutes to create a backup. When I checked our backups I found they've grown to over 800MB each (up from 280MB 2 years ago.)

The biggest uses of space are a folder of schedule report YAML files at 1.2GB, and 670MB of Ticket uploads.

Can I just delete files from these directories or do I need to do something through the Spiceworks interface?

Thanks.

We would use this opportunity to talk among the group and keep vendor sales pitches out.

Migration to Azure | 2008R2 Domain Controllers

Hi all, sorry .. another Azure question!

As the title states, I am in the process of migrating an on-premise infrastructure to Azure. It will be in a hybrid setup for sometime though as I have a lot of other legacy systems / apps to think about too.

Although I've planned most of the steps for 70% of our infrastructure; I'm slightly confused about my options when it comes to domain controllers. To elaborate:

I have 2 on-premise domain controllers, both are running Server 2008R2. (which is end of life January 2020). We already have Azure AD sync for Office365 / SSO / User / Password replication.

Question: I know I need to put a DC in Azure and I want to get rid of my 2008R2 DC's, but what is the best route? This is what I have so far. You can assume VNET's / Subnets / Gateways and site to site VPN's have already been configured in Azure.

S10 price is falling like crazy, already more than 200€ down on initial price

During the S10 launch some of us here talked about pricing and how it changes after release and I wrote:

...considering prices will drop by 30-40% after six months or even less. I'm looking forwarding to buying a brand new S10 for less than 500 later this year.

Today I got an email from idealo.de about new low price of 689,90 (it was priced at 894 at launch) for S10 128GB verson, so little over a month later price is down for more than 200 or roughly 23%. That's actually incredible from perspective of a potential buyer, maybe not as much from those who pre-ordered or bought it early and didn't even get ear buds with it.

I'm really curious to see how long it'll take for price to basically get cut in half, and in my personal opinion, this (or any really) phone becomes worth the money. I have no idea how the phone is currently selling, so is...

Ubuntu - Kerberos Installation Issue

Greetings,

I'm a Linux newbie - Just started to learn Ubuntu 18.04. I created the VM, installed the OS, and in the process of adding it to the AD. During the installation of SSSD (kerberos, Samba...), I made a mistake. I did not enter my AD info while installing krb5. The krb5.conf ended up with the MIT.EDU info as the default realm instead. I removed then reinstalled krb5 and the conf file remained the same. I deleted the krb5.conf thinking it'd be recreated by the krb5 re-install - Wrong! The file is gone.

So I tried searching for the solution but haven't found any answer. I hope I might get some help here - Any comment will be much appreciated. BTW, it seems that the krb5.conf mentioned in this thread https://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/445-integrate-linux-with-active-directory-using-samba-winbin... would work for me, correct? Can...

Windows update corrupting power settings

Hi guys,

Just a heads up, I've had this happen on a couple of laptops at work and, more importantly, on my wife's laptop at home.

A recent Windows update appears to have corrupted the power profile on the computers, causing them to go to sleep after a minute, even if they are in use.  Very annoying when you are constantly prompted to login again.

The solution I found was to run the power troubleshooter in Settings, Update &Security, troubleshoot.

This caused the power profile to be reset to defaults and allowed you to set the timeouts to a reasonable setting.

Skype For Business is requesting for a password on first login - Mobile Device

Our Skype for business for mobile devices is asking for a password during the first login. But we have already enabled certificate based authentication in our hybrid environment.

The password prompt only gets triggered on the very first login. But all succeeding logins does not require you to input a password because it triggers the modern authentication (certificate based authentication).

We wanted to remove the input of password on first login. How can I do that? and what triggers the password prompt?
